Commercial fishing crews joined together at the mouth of the Naknek River to peacefully protest the low price that processors are offering for this year's sockeye salmon. They want processors to reconsider the 50 cents per-pound price, as well as more transparency in the fishery.Welch served as host of Alaska Fish Radio for more than three decades, bringing news and perspectives on the fishing industry to listeners around the state. The fleet caught 67,000 fish on Wednesday, for a total harvest of almost 22.7 million fish. 46,697 salmon escaped up the district’s rivers, for a season total of 17.3 million.Area M. In Area M, North and South Peninsula fleets harvested 42,862 fish on Friday for a total of 809,001 this season. 131 Chinook were harvested yesterday, and 297 chum.
